Coal Houses

These coal houses are some of the test pieces I have been working on with the intention of further development for a larger sculpture.  I have taken a lot of inspiration from an abandoned colliery in Barnsley, which is haunted by a tragic tale of death and has been left to decay.  In 2013, they were given Grade II listed status to commemorate their important, deadly past.  As a recent regeneration of many old mining towns, new housing estates are emerging on old pit sites, places which are filled with historic and heroic tales of the town’s industrial past.  This collection is an experiment with different glazing and imagery that will inform a much larger structure, the imagery is fading and decaying to symbolise a faded memory of the heritage and communities that have been lost in time.

Mill Workers

This collection was inspired by workers in the textiles industry, the workers are shown throughout their life enduring the labour of the industrial past.  In the imagery the workers start from a young age, threading cotton reals and move on through time clocking in and out.  Stamps of different times have been imprinted onto the surface of the vases to symbolise the strict routine of work in an industrial setting.
